About the Blue Agate

Across a plate this size the blue is a range rather than a single color. Some areas are saturated and almost inky, others pale and clouded, and the white quartz seams between the bands run from hairline to broad.

The stone is cut thin enough that the paler areas pass light. On a dark table the tray reads as a deep block of blue; carried past a window, the translucent patches come up bright and the banding inside them shows.

How It’s Made

Pieces of agate in similar tones and colors are joined with a clear epoxy resin, poured over them to make one firm plate. That is how a tray reaches 10" x 15". The plate is trimmed with electroformed brass, real metal grown onto the stone and permanently bonded rather than a leaf or coating that can rub off, and a plain modern handle is fitted at each end. The handles are solid brass, with the whole tray finished in silver, rose gold or gold.
