About the Agate

Brown agate reads as stacked bands of coffee, caramel and tan, with the odd line of cream running through. The color moves in waves rather than blocks, because the stone was laid down in layers and then cut across them so the rings show.

Light is what moves it. Thin outer bands go translucent and warm near a lamp, while the dense brown stays solid and dark. Under ordinary room light the surface settles into quiet earth tones and the metal edge does the catching.

How It’s Made

The tray is a rectangle of 10"x15" with a handle at each short end. Pieces of agate in similar brown tones are joined with a clear epoxy resin poured over them to make one firm plate, so the serving surface is level rather than a set of loose slices. The stone edge is electroformed: real metal grown onto the agate and permanently bonded, not a leaf or coating that can rub off. The handles are solid brass. Gold edging follows the warmth already in the stone, silver cools it.
